| There are many
variants of this type of lock, some complex and very
secure and a large range of what we would describe as
deterrents. This type of
lock can also be used in Master Key systems as well as
most multipoint locking systems, see keys and keying
systems above.
The picture to the right gives
a good indication of how these locks work, when the key
is inserted into what is called the plug the bottom pins
are pushed up to the sheer line, allowing the plug to
rotate and operate the lock.
Some of these locks have wafers instead of pins, but the
principle is the same.
