There are many variants of this type of lock, some complex and very secure and a large range of what we would describe as deterrents.

This type of lock can also be used in Master Key systems as well as most multipoint locking systems, see keys and keying systems above.

The picture to the right gives a good indication of how these locks work, when the key is inserted into what is called the plug the bottom pins are pushed up to the sheer line, allowing the plug to rotate and operate the lock.
Some of these locks have wafers instead of pins, but the principle is the same.

Most locks come with their own fitting instructions. What we do here is make you aware of some of the tips and tricks that we have learned over the years.
The most common type of cylinder security lock is the Cylinder Nightlatch, most often found on wooden entrance and internal doors and for this type of lock there are two different gauges, one is 40mm to the key centre and the other is 60mm to the key centre. If possible go for the larger gauge lock as this will give more room between the door frame and the keyway making it easier to operate. You may however have a narrow style on your door, often the case with panel doors and the narrow gauge will be more suitable.
